The US government has raised concerns that China is pressuring American states and businesses to reduce their engagement with Taiwan. Recent letters from the Departments of State, Commerce, and Agriculture indicate that Chinese officials have been in contact with local entities to influence their interactions with Taiwan.
Joint Letters from US Departments
Dated June 16 and unveiled by the American Institute in Taiwan, the letters allege that Chinese consulates frequently reach out to US state officials and business figures. According to the US government, these communications often distort Washington's stance on Taiwan and attempt to hinder economic collaborations with the island.
Pressure Reporting Encouraged
US officials have urged governors, CEOs, and business leaders to inform the State Department if they experience pressure from Chinese authorities regarding Taiwan. The letters underscore that strengthening economic, agricultural, and trade relations with Taiwan aligns with US policy.
Support from Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry
Taiwan's Foreign Ministry praised the letters, asserting that they reflect Washington's dedication to enhancing cooperation despite Beijing’s increasing pressure. Officials noted Taiwan's significant role as a partner in global trade and technology, with established business relationships in the US.
No Response from China Yet
China’s Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to the allegations. Beijing still regards Taiwan as a part of its territory and opposes any official exchanges between Taiwan and foreign countries. Meanwhile, the US adheres to its longstanding "One China" policy while fostering unofficial relations with Taiwan.
Taiwan's Economic Significance Highlighted
The letters also emphasize Taiwan's critical role in global supply chains, especially in advanced technology and semiconductor production. US officials believe that deepening cooperation with Taiwan is mutually beneficial and strengthens long-term business associations.
Ongoing Diplomatic Tensions
This recent communication illustrates the continuous strategic rivalry between Washington and Beijing regarding Taiwan. While the US advocates for increased economic partnership, China remains opposed to any form of international acknowledgment or formal relationships involving the self-governing island.
