Michael Duarte, known by his online persona "FoodWithBearHands,", has tragically died following a confrontation with police in Castroville, Texas. This incident unfolded on November 8, culminating in a Medina County sheriff’s deputy fatally shooting Duarte after he allegedly threatened officers with a knife.
Officials reported that deputies responded to an urgent call regarding a “male subject with a knife acting erratically.” Upon arrival, Duarte purportedly ignored commands to relinquish the knife and comply. Instead, he reportedly advanced towards the deputy, declaring, "I'm going to kill you," which led to the officer firing two shots.
Duarte received immediate medical care and was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was later pronounced deceased. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Duarte was displaying erratic behavior, posing an immediate threat to first responders.
A California native, Duarte rose to fame on social media for his barbecue and grilling expertise. His untimely demise has left his followers and the culinary community in shock. Sources indicate Duarte was undergoing a mental health crisis during the confrontation.
Alooma Media Group, which represented Duarte, expressed profound grief over his loss, fondly recalling him as a devoted husband and father. “Michael was beyond just a client. He was a true partner, a trusted collaborator, and an outstanding individual whose creativity impacted everyone he worked with,” the agency stated.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Duarte’s family with funeral expenses and to facilitate his return to California. These funds will support his wife, Jessica, and their young daughter, Oakley, during this challenging time.
Duarte’s unexpected passing emphasizes the critical need for mental health awareness and the unpredictability of crisis situations with law enforcement.
