With tensions rising and the world watching closely, the Pentagon has ordered a second US aircraft carrier strike group to be ready for deployment to the Middle East. This move comes amid fears of a possible attack on Iran.
Citing military officials, this decision is part of President Trump’s strategy to increase pressure on Iran during nuclear negotiations. Trump has described the naval buildup as an "armada" to provide "tough" options if diplomatic talks fail.
One official noted that the deployment order could be issued within hours, signaling the urgency of the situation.
The US aims to achieve several objectives with this move:
Negotiation leverage: Strengthen the US position during nuclear talks with Iran, currently held in Oman.
Deterrence: Respond to recent Iranian actions, including the attempted seizure of a US tanker and a drone attack on a US surveillance aircraft.
Humanitarian pressure: Send a message against Tehran’s violent crackdown on domestic anti-government protesters, which has killed thousands.
President Trump had previously stated that he was considering sending a second carrier to prepare for military action if talks fail. The move signals heightened US readiness and the possibility of a strong response to Iran’s provocations.
