The United States has officially confirmed its participation in Expo 2030 Riyadh following a new agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and the US. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the agreement on Friday in Atlanta, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The agreement establishes a formal framework for American participation in the international exhibition and strengthens cooperation between the two countries ahead of the major global event.
The agreement was signed during a meeting between the two officials on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta. Their discussions covered strategic relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States, opportunities to expand cooperation in priority sectors and developments across the Middle East. Both sides also exchanged views on regional challenges and diplomatic efforts to address them. Saudi Ambassador to the United States Princess Reema bint Bandar also attended the meeting.

Under the agreement, the United States will participate as an official country participant in Expo 2030 Riyadh. The framework will support preparations, coordination and cooperation between the two countries ahead of the six-month international exhibition. The participation also reflects the importance of international partnerships in bringing together governments, businesses, innovators and cultural organisations for a major global event.
Saudi Arabia secured the right to host World Expo 2030 in November 2023 during the 173rd General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris. Riyadh received 119 votes out of 165 eligible votes in the first round, defeating competing bids from Busan in South Korea and Rome in Italy. The selection marked an important achievement for Saudi Arabia's international development and economic ambitions.
Expo 2030 Riyadh is scheduled to take place from October 1, 2030, to March 31, 2031. The event will operate under the theme "The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow." Its three main sub-themes are "A Different Tomorrow", focusing on science, innovation and technology; "Climate Action", highlighting environmental sustainability and renewable energy; and "Prosperity for All", promoting inclusive economic growth and balanced development.
The exhibition will be developed across a site covering approximately six million square metres north of Riyadh, near the King Salman International Airport development. Organisers expect participation from more than 195 countries and international organisations, with projected visitor numbers exceeding 40 million. The master plan includes a circular layout designed to provide participating countries with equal visibility and access. Transport connections will include the Riyadh Metro, express bus services and airport connectivity to support visitors.
Saudi Arabia plans to develop Expo 2030 Riyadh as a net-zero carbon event powered by clean energy. The project is expected to incorporate green corridors, passive-shading infrastructure and sustainable development features. Transport networks and modern facilities will play an important role in managing the expected international visitor numbers while supporting the Kingdom's wider infrastructure development goals.
Expo 2030 is expected to become a major international platform for showcasing Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 transformation programme. The exhibition is expected to create opportunities in tourism, infrastructure, transportation, investment and international business partnerships. It will be the first World Expo hosted by Saudi Arabia and the second in the Gulf region after Expo 2020 Dubai, which attracted more than 24 million visitors.
