US Intensifies Pressure on Ukraine for Peace Agreement Amid Military Aid Threat

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The United States is ramping up its pressure on Ukraine to agree to a new peace deal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. Sources indicate that Washington has cautioned Kyiv that it may reduce intelligence sharing and military assistance if Ukraine does not move ahead with the proposed framework.

What Occurred

This development took place in Kyiv, where senior US military officials held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting transpired during a critical phase, as the US urged Ukraine to finalize its agreement to the proposed peace deal framework by the upcoming Thursday.

The suggested agreement encompasses a 28-point plan presented by the US, which includes various key demands from Russia, such as Ukraine conceding more territory, downsizing its military forces, and remaining outside NATO.

Intensified Pressure on Ukraine

Insiders reveal that this marks the most significant pressure the US has exerted on Ukraine during peace negotiations. One informant stated that the US is eager to see the war come to an end swiftly, even if it requires Ukraine to make challenging concessions.

Kyiv is being urged to endorse the framework promptly, with US officials labeling the deadline as “aggressive.”

Details of the Proposal

The US proposition reportedly necessitates Ukraine to:

  • Cede additional contested territory to Russia

  • Restrict the size of its military forces

  • Agree not to pursue NATO membership

  • Establish a new security arrangement with the United States

In return, Ukraine would gain long-term security assurances and ongoing international backing.

Responses from Kyiv

President Zelensky engaged with the visiting US officials to deliberate on the proposal. Although some American representatives deemed the meeting “successful,” there is unease in Ukraine regarding the potential consequences of succumbing to pressures that could jeopardize its future security.

The message from Washington was unambiguous: failure to reach an agreement soon may result in a reduction of US intelligence and military support.

Impending Tensions

Ukraine now finds itself under a critical timeline. Agreeing to the plan could lead to a negotiated resolution of the war, while refusal could jeopardize its essential military and intelligence partnership.
