Venezuela Threatens Legal Action Against Maria Machado for Nobel Ceremony Trip

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Authorities in Venezuela have issued a warning to opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado, suggesting she may be labeled a "fugitive" if she proceeds to Norway for the Nobel ceremony scheduled for December 10. Currently, Machado asserts that she is in hiding within the country but plans to travel to Oslo to accept her award.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab detailed that Machado is facing multiple criminal probes, which include charges of conspiracy, instigating hatred, and terrorism. Additionally, she is under scrutiny for allegedly endorsing the deployment of U.S. military forces in the Caribbean region, a move Caracas asserts is aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro’s administration.

The U.S. has dispatched its largest aircraft carrier and several warships, along with fighter jets, to the Caribbean for anti-drug operations. Machado has publicly backed this military activity, alleging that Maduro heads a drug cartel. Conversely, the Venezuelan government has described assaults on alleged drug vessels as “extrajudicial killings,” with reports indicating at least 83 fatalities.

In a recent video message, Machado articulated that Venezuela stands “on the brink of a new era” while reiterating her opposition to Maduro’s regime. Authorities have emphasized that if Machado exits the country during her investigation, she would be deemed a fugitive and face potential legal repercussions.

This latest development intensifies the already volatile political atmosphere in Venezuela, underscoring the enduring conflict between the ruling government and opposition leaders. Machado’s attendance at the Nobel ceremony now hangs in the balance, given these stern warnings.
