India's largest airline, IndiGo, has appointed Willie Walsh, a seasoned aviation industry leader, as its new chief executive. Walsh will assume charge in August, following the conclusion of his term as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The move comes weeks after the sudden resignation of former CEO Pieter Elbers on March 10, officially citing personal reasons. Analysts, however, link Elbers’ departure to the airline’s massive operational crisis, which disrupted thousands of flights in December 2025—the largest in the airline’s 20-year history.
During the disruption, approximately 4,500 flights were canceled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across India. With IndiGo controlling nearly two-thirds of the domestic aviation market, the cancellations caused severe inconvenience, forcing travelers to miss critical events, including weddings and funerals, and scramble for alternative arrangements.
The crisis followed new pilot duty and rest regulations introduced to reduce crew fatigue. IndiGo later admitted to underestimating the number of pilots needed to comply with the rules. In response, India’s aviation regulator fined the airline $2.45 million and criticized senior executives, including Elbers, for their handling of the situation.
In the interim, co-founder Rahul Bhatia took over leadership and will continue until Walsh officially joins.
Walsh brings extensive experience in global aviation. He served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 and concluded a 15-year career with International Airlines Group (IAG) in 2020. Beginning as a cadet pilot at Aer Lingus in the late 1970s, Walsh rose through operations roles to become CEO of the Irish carrier in 2001.
“The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to lead this change,” Walsh said.
IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta highlighted Walsh’s proven track record in managing large airlines and navigating complex markets, describing him as the ideal choice to guide IndiGo’s next growth phase.
Currently, IndiGo operates over 400 aircraft, running thousands of domestic flights daily alongside select international routes. The airline is also expanding its presence in the premium international travel segment.
