Record Power Demand Surge in Vietnam Due to Extreme Heat

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam is urging households, businesses, and industries to curtail electricity use following an unprecedented heatwave that has pushed the country’s power demand to an all-time high. The state-operated Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) cautioned that the soaring temperatures have significantly strained the national electricity grid as millions depend on air conditioning and cooling devices.

Authorities emphasize that power conservation is crucial to maintaining stable electricity supplies during this extreme weather situation.

Historic Peak in Electricity Demand

EVN has revealed that peak power demand in Vietnam has reached 58.46 gigawatts, marking the highest level noted in the nation’s history. This peak is attributed to the relentless high temperatures, with many areas recording temperatures surpassing 40°C.

Energy officials are diligently tracking electricity usage to ensure grid stability and mitigate service disruptions.

Strategies for Addressing Increased Power Demands

In light of the growing electricity needs, Vietnam is maximizing output at all operational power plants while also looking to import extra power from neighboring nations. These emergency strategies aim to guarantee a steady electricity supply during the heatwave.

EVN is advocating for energy-saving habits among consumers, such as setting air conditioners to 26°C or higher, turning off electrical appliances when not in use, opting for natural ventilation, and minimizing electricity use during peak hours.

Continuing Heatwave Conditions Expected

Weather forecasts indicate that the extreme heat will persist across multiple regions in the upcoming days. As temperatures remain elevated, electricity demands are likely to follow suit.

Officials are appealing to the public to join in energy-saving initiatives to alleviate the strain on the national electricity system.

Impact of Climate Change on Energy Consumption

Experts highlight that climate change is contributing to higher temperatures, which in turn increases electricity demands annually, thereby posing new challenges for Vietnam's energy infrastructure. This swelling demand for cooling adds pressure on power generation and transmission systems, especially during extended heatwaves.

To ensure reliable electricity in the future, enhancing renewable energy production, expanding grid capacities, and improving energy efficiency are essential strategies.

Government Monitoring of Power Supply Continues

Vietnamese officials have guaranteed vigilant monitoring of electricity generation and distribution nationwide. The government indicated that additional measures will be implemented if necessary, to sustain uninterrupted power supply and safeguard vital infrastructure during this phase of extreme weather.
