The FBI has taken into custody a Virginia man connected to the pipe bombs that were planted outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee offices on the night preceding the January 6, 2021 Capitol incident.
The accused, 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. of Woodbridge, is believed to have spent considerable time gathering materials to create explosive devices placed near these political headquarters. His arrest represents a significant milestone in a nearly five-year-long investigation.
Attorney General Pam Bondi pointed out that this arrest stemmed from persistent investigative efforts rather than new witness testimonies or tips.
Cole faces two federal charges regarding explosives and is set for an appearance in federal court on Friday. Following the arrest, law enforcement conducted search operations at his home in Woodbridge, with investigators meticulously analyzing items while wearing hazmat suits. Authorities have indicated that more charges may follow.
Evidence tying Cole to the bombs includes cell phone tower data placing him close to Capitol Hill on January 5, 2021, security footage corroborating his presence, and credit card records that reflected purchases aligned with the bomb components. Additionally, a license plate reader tracked his vehicle near the explosion sites.
For years, investigators meticulously sifted through tens of thousands of video files, cell phone information, and retail records, including the rare Nike Air Max sneakers identified on the bomber, in their efforts to reveal the suspect's identity. Despite a $500,000 reward and over a thousand interviews, the case lingered in uncertainty due to subpar surveillance footage and mask-wearing during the pandemic.
The case had garnered political scrutiny, as some speculated about potential ties to the events of January 6. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that a forensic breakthrough enabled them to identify Cole, but chose not to elaborate on the specifics.
“You’re not going to walk into our capital city, put down two explosive devices and walk off into the sunset,” Bongino remarked.
The investigation continues, with authorities actively pursuing warrants and examining new evidence.
