Abu Dhabi is making history by hosting the World Conference of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) for the first time in the Arab region. The event demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to inclusive development and upholding the rights of Persons with Disabilities as outlined under the UN Convention.
Participants and Key Discussions
The conference gathers sign language interpreters, educators, government officials, and civil society representatives from around the globe. Discussions will cover interpreter education, professional standards, advanced training, research, and innovative methods to deliver high-quality services to deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Local interpreters gain an invaluable opportunity to network with international peers and exchange expertise.
Launch of Level 4 Diploma in Interpretation
As part of the conference, ZAPoD, in collaboration with WASLI, introduced a specialised Level 4 Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation. The programme is accredited by the UAE’s National Qualifications Centre and includes training in both Arabic and international sign languages. It prepares professionals for simultaneous and written interpretation in fields such as healthcare, education, justice, media, and public services.
Program Features and Objectives
The diploma combines advanced cognitive and practical skills, field training, and a strong focus on ethics and professional standards. Its primary goal is to improve service quality, ensuring accurate and effective communication for People of Determination throughout the region. The programme sets a high benchmark for professional training in sign language interpretation.
Promoting Regional Collaboration and Deaf Rights
The conference serves as a platform to discuss regional challenges, encourage cross-border collaboration, and explore ways to unify global efforts in promoting the rights of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. WASLI’s nine global regions provide participants with both regional and international perspectives, enhancing knowledge sharing and professional growth.
Abu Dhabi as a Hub for Inclusion
By hosting this landmark event, Abu Dhabi positions itself as a global centre for inclusion and accessibility. The combination of the conference and the Level 4 Diploma programme strengthens sustainable, equitable, and high-quality services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities across the Arab world.
The WASLI World Conference and the associated diploma programme reflect the UAE’s commitment to inclusion, innovation, and professional excellence in sign language interpretation. The event not only empowers interpreters but also promotes broader awareness of the rights and needs of People of Determination, establishing Abu Dhabi as a key hub for global dialogue and professional development in the field.
