In a groundbreaking move, Winnipeg Police have confirmed the largest drug seizures in their history, culminating from a vast, two-year investigation. Dubbed “Project Puma,” this extensive operation has led to the arrest of 33 individuals and precipitated 174 criminal charges across multiple provinces, unveiling a substantial organized crime network involved in drug trafficking throughout Canada.
During coordinated raids in Manitoba, Alberta, and Ontario, investigators seized substantial amounts of illegal substances: about 339 kilograms of methamphetamine, 175 kilograms of cocaine, and over 11 kilograms of fentanyl. Authorities revealed that these drugs were part of a broad distribution network tied to organized crime factions across Canada.
Authorities characterized the operation as Manitoba's most significant drug seizure ever, with 14 firearms, almost $825,000 in cash, and more than one million contraband cigarettes also confiscated. Reports indicate connections to high-profile crime organizations, including the Hells Angels and the Wolfpack Alliance gang, alongside unidentified Mexican cartels.
The investigation was initiated in late 2023 after intelligence pinpointed a major criminal entity operating between Manitoba and Alberta. In May 2024, Project Puma was officially launched, supported by provincial agencies and law enforcement bodies nationwide. Over the course of the investigation, the authorities uncovered numerous trafficking groups that collaborated within a larger criminal framework dedicated to importing and distributing illicit drugs.
Josh Ewatski, Inspector of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Organized Crime division, highlighted the escalating issues of addiction and overdose throughout Canada as a result of the widespread availability of fentanyl, cocaine, and meth. He noted that the investigation aimed to target both high-ranking organizers and street-level dealers within the network. Dismantling this operation is expected to significantly curtail the influx of threatening drugs into Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.
Manitoba's Justice Minister, Matt Wiebe, commended the operation as a key triumph against organized crime, noting the critical role of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and governmental bodies in achieving the successes of the operation. Authorities have cautioned that criminal organizations are increasingly uniting across provincial and international boundaries, complicating drug investigations more than ever.
This case has attracted considerable attention nationwide due to the magnitude of the drug bust and rising alarm over fentanyl-related fatalities and organized criminal activities. Law enforcement maintains that the investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of further arrests or charges as they meticulously analyze ongoing evidence associated with the trafficking network.
