Fifth Arab Cultural Heritage Forum Concludes in Sharjah

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The fifth edition of the Arab Cultural Heritage Forum concluded on Friday in Sharjah, UAE. Organized by the Regional Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation in the Arab World, the forum focused on the theme: "The Role of Women and Youth in Preserving Cultural Heritage and Museum Innovation." Experts, policymakers, and cultural practitioners gathered to discuss strategies for safeguarding and promoting Arab cultural heritage across generations.

Integrating Heritage in Education

Forum participants recommended integrating heritage topics into school curricula at all levels. They stressed the importance of developing specialized vocational training programs for youth and women in fields such as preservation, documentation, cultural entrepreneurship, media, and communication. Such programs aim to enhance public engagement with heritage and strengthen cultural literacy among younger generations.

Community Awareness and Engagement

The forum emphasized raising deep community awareness about heritage through non-formal education, museums, and libraries. Initiatives targeting children and youth were suggested to foster stronger connections between generations and the values of cultural heritage. Participants highlighted the role of cultural programs in creating a sense of identity, belonging, and respect for tradition.

Promoting Equal Opportunities

Recommendations included ensuring equal opportunities for women and youth in participation, leadership, and decision-making roles. The forum also called for documenting women’s contributions to heritage preservation and integrating marginalized groups and displaced persons into heritage policies. Heritage was recognized as a tool for promoting peace, social cohesion, and inclusive development in society.

Supporting Youth and Women’s Initiatives

The forum proposed providing foundational grants to support youth and women-led cultural projects. In addition, participants stressed the importance of enhancing marketing skills and cultural innovation capacities to transform heritage into a sustainable economic resource. Empowering young people and women in this sector was highlighted as a key step toward preserving and promoting Arab heritage.

Digital Innovation and Documentation

In the field of documentation, participants recommended establishing unified regional archives and electronic libraries. They also encouraged the use of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and spatial documentation, ensuring strict adherence to ethical standards. Leveraging technology was seen as essential for preserving cultural heritage efficiently while promoting accessibility and research.

Combining Expertise for Innovation

The forum emphasized the need to combine the technical knowledge of youth skilled in technology with the expertise of seasoned heritage professionals. This collaboration is intended to develop innovative digital tools, improve documentation methods, and ensure that new initiatives are both effective and sustainable. Such cooperation will enhance the quality and impact of heritage preservation efforts.

Monitoring and Reporting on Heritage

Participants also recommended preparing periodic reports on the state of heritage in the region. Documenting emerging cultural initiatives and assessing their impact was highlighted as vital for planning future programs. Monitoring and reporting were seen as essential mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement in cultural preservation and heritage engagement.

The fifth Arab Cultural Heritage Forum in Sharjah successfully highlighted the critical role of women and youth in preserving and promoting Arab cultural heritage. Through education, community engagement, equal opportunities, and digital innovation, the forum set a roadmap for sustainable heritage management. It reinforced the importance of collaboration across generations and sectors to ensure that Arab cultural heritage remains vibrant and meaningful for years to come.
