The social media platform X has begun the rollout of a feature named "About This Account," aimed at assisting users in confirming the authenticity of profiles. This new feature reveals essential information, including the account's location, creation date, and any previous username changes. The goal is to empower users to identify fraudulent or misleading accounts, especially amidst the growing presence of bots and AI-generated profiles.
This initiative followed an extensive period of internal deliberation at X. Initially, it was accessible solely on the accounts of X employees and the company's product head, Nikita Bier. Now, it is set to reach a broader audience.
To utilize this feature, users simply need to click on the "Joined" date visible on any X profile. This action opens a dedicated page that presents vital information such as:
The creation date of the account
The geographic location associated with the account
The frequency of username changes along with the date of the last alteration
The method through which the user accesses X (like Google Play or the App Store)
This level of transparency assists users in making informed choices regarding account authenticity. For instance, if a profile engages in local conversations yet has a recent creation date with a location that is quite distant, it might indicate a fake account.
However, post-launch, some users reported discrepancies. Certain profiles displayed incorrect country origins or erroneous account creation locations. For example, one user found their profile erroneously stated they were from the United States instead of Canada. X promptly responded, identifying that issues related to VPN usage or internet service providers like Starlink could be impacting the data.
In light of these challenges, the feature was temporarily suspended for select users but has since been reinstated. X is actively working to resolve these inaccuracies and incorporate new indicators for location data that may be affected by VPNs.
The introduction of this feature is part of a larger movement toward transparency across social media. Other platforms like Instagram also offer similar features to assist users in identifying authentic accounts.
Ultimately, the "About This Account" feature is designed to diminish misinformation and foster trust within the platform by providing users with easy access to vital details about their online interactions.
