Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S), a global initiative led by Masdar, has launched a new programme called Beyond Borders. The aim of this international initiative is to take sustainability learning outside traditional classrooms and into real-world environments where young leaders can create practical impact. The programme seeks to empower the next generation to lead energy and sustainability transformations globally.
First Edition In Malaysia
The inaugural edition of Beyond Borders took place in Malaysia. Ten young changemakers from different countries came together for five days of activities that combined workshops, site visits, and digital storytelling. The programme gave participants the chance to learn about Malaysia’s energy transformation, engage with local stakeholders, and explore solutions that connect global goals with local realities.
Practical Learning And Cultural Exchange
The participants, all of whom are part of the Y4S Future Sustainability Leaders programme, benefited from a unique mix of practical experience and cultural exchange. They worked on real-world energy challenges and developed case studies that linked people, policy, and technology. This approach not only strengthened their leadership skills but also encouraged cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
Focus On Energy Transformation
During their stay in Malaysia, the youth interacted with leading figures in the country’s energy sector. They visited Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the nation’s largest utility company, where they learned about Malaysia’s power infrastructure and the strategies driving the shift towards renewable energy. This gave them valuable insights into how a country balances energy demand with sustainability goals.
Engagement At Energy University
The group also visited Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia’s top energy-focused university. Here, they participated in hands-on workshops focused on inclusive energy systems. Through design challenges, innovation labs, and collaborative case studies, the participants worked together to propose new ideas for making energy systems more sustainable and fair. These sessions allowed them to connect their academic knowledge with real-world applications.
Youth Showcase Of Solutions
The programme concluded with a youth showcase, where participants presented their findings and proposed solutions to local energy challenges. This final stage allowed the young leaders to demonstrate their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Their proposals emphasized practical and locally relevant solutions while also contributing to broader global sustainability goals.
Voices Of The Participants
Narmeen Almarzooqi, one of the Future Sustainability Leaders, shared her thoughts about the programme. She explained that experiencing Malaysia’s energy landscape firsthand through site visits, community interaction, and storytelling deepened her passion for sustainability. She added that Beyond Borders showed how experiential learning and cross-cultural cooperation can empower youth to play a central role in the global energy transformation.
Institutional Reflections On The Programme
According to Zainab Al Ali, Director of Outreach and Stakeholder Relations at Masdar, Beyond Borders Malaysia marked an important milestone for Y4S. She described it as a new benchmark for delivering impact at scale. She emphasized that the programme shows how Y4S prepares youth to shape policy, drive innovation, and lead in the energy sector at a global level.
Long-Term Impact Beyond Malaysia
While the programme lasted only five days, its impact is designed to go far beyond. The participants will take their learning back to their home countries and apply it to local projects. They will also use the new networks and partnerships they developed to advance sustainability initiatives. This ensures that the experience in Malaysia will continue to influence their work in the future.
Building Partnerships In Southeast Asia
For Y4S, Beyond Borders also deepens partnerships with academic and industry stakeholders in Southeast Asia. By working with local organizations, universities, and companies, the programme created strong foundations for long-term collaboration. Y4S also views Beyond Borders as a scalable model that can be adapted and implemented in other regions worldwide.
Diverse Group Of Young Leaders
The first edition brought together an interdisciplinary group of young leaders from different countries. Participants included Matar AlSuwaidi, Shaqra Al Tamimi, Narmeen Almarzooqi, Ahmed Almheiri, Saleh AlShamsi, Doaa AlAlimi, Arvid Leonard Ehlert, Habibalrahman Hassan, Maria Benkhalifa, and Navya Garg. Together, they represented diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, blending technical expertise, policy insights, and storytelling skills to support a just and inclusive energy transition.
Youth As Drivers Of Change
Beyond Borders Malaysia proved that young people are not only learners but also leaders in sustainability. Through workshops, site visits, and innovation labs, the programme demonstrated how youth can help shape the future of energy transformation. With continued editions planned for other regions, Beyond Borders will continue to empower young changemakers and strengthen the role of youth in building a sustainable future for all.
