Zarine Khan: A Multifaceted Journey from Cinema to Design

Post by : Meena Hassan

Zarine Khan, the acclaimed actress, model, and interior designer, passed away peacefully at her Mumbai home on Friday morning at the age of 81 after battling age-related health issues. Her departure signifies the end of a remarkable era as she transitioned from a glamorous film career in the 1960s and 1970s to becoming a respected name in interior design, leaving a deep void in both industries that she touched over decades.

Background and Early Life

Born as Zarine Katrak, she grew up in a Parsi family and was raised in a Hindu setting. This eclectic upbringing informed much of her life, including her marriage to actor-director Sanjay Khan, a notable figure in Bollywood.

Zarine’s film career launched in the early 1960s, quickly establishing her as a talented actress and model. She starred in notable films like Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) alongside the iconic Dev Anand, showcasing her grace and charm that resonated with audiences during that golden era.

Gradually withdrawing from the film industry, Zarine pursued her passion for interior design, where she left an equally significant impact.

The Transition to Design and Lasting Impact

Post her cinematic endeavors, Zarine carved a niche in interior design, respected for her sophisticated taste and innovative vision. Her projects ranged across India, shaping the aesthetics of numerous homes and commercial spaces. Her design ethos beautifully merged elegance and practicality, rendering her a revered figure in the design world.

Despite her achievements, Zarine lived modestly, emphasizing privacy over publicity, focusing on her family and craft.

Final Days and Rites

Following a prolonged illness related to her age, Zarine's passing at her residence was marked by her funeral held on the same day, which was conducted by her son, Zayed Khan. The rituals, carried out in line with Hindu traditions, reflected her personal beliefs and upbringing. Emotional footage showed Zayed in deep sorrow during the ceremonies, underscoring the family's loss.

The decision to adhere to Hindu customs raised questions online but was a choice made to honor her life's values.

Condolences from the Bollywood Fraternity

Zarine Khan’s passing elicited heartfelt condolences from the Bollywood community, with numerous stars visiting her home to pay respects. Celebrities like Hrithik Roshan and Saba Azad were seen attending the somber gathering, and actor Bobby Deol was visibly shaken following the rituals.

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan, alongside her daughter Shweta, and other celebrities like Jackie Shroff, Nargis Fakhri, and Rakul Preet Singh came forward to express their sympathies, illustrating the lasting impression Zarine had on both film and design sectors.

Surviving Family

Zarine leaves behind her husband Sanjay Khan, a luminary in Indian cinema. Their children, including Sussanne Khan, an esteemed interior designer, Simone Arora, Farah Ali Khan, and actor Zayed Khan, continue her legacy in the arts.

Remembering Zarine Khan

The narrative of Zarine Khan’s life, from the silver screen to a notable career in interior design, exhibits her adaptability and fervor for diverse creative expressions. She not only contributed significantly to her fields but also exemplified grace and humility, earning admiration across generations.

As a film icon from Bollywood's flourishing years, and as an interior designer who set benchmarks in sophistication, Zarine's memory will endure through her work and the lives she influenced.
