US Military Targets 10th Suspected Drug Boat in Caribbean

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Friday, the US military executed its tenth strike on a suspected drug vessel in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and intensifying its anti-drug operations. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed that this action aimed at a boat associated with the Tren de Aragua gang, which emerged from a Venezuelan prison, marking the first nighttime strike by US forces.

Hegseth noted the operation was executed in international waters and stressed that the Trump administration views drug traffickers as threats akin to terrorists, vowing to relentlessly pursue and neutralize them. This strike took place amidst a significant buildup of US military presence in the Caribbean region and near Venezuela, raising alarms about possible escalating tensions.

The frequency of strikes has seen a notable surge, rising from one every several weeks in September to three just this week. Notably, two of these recent operations took place in the eastern Pacific, highlighting an extended area of engagement where cocaine smuggling is prevalent. Pentagon-released footage captured a small boat in tranquil waters, which was then hit by a missile leading to a devastating explosion.

In response, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro criticized these actions, claiming the US uses fabricated drug trafficking allegations to justify regime change efforts. Venezuelan Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino accused the US of instigating a push for regime change, whereas the Trump administration insists these military undertakings are essential in the fight against narcotics and terrorism.

Trump has characterized drug cartels as illegal combatants, asserting that the US is engaged in an “armed conflict” against them, drawing parallels to the post-9/11 anti-terrorism efforts and signaling a shift in strategies against drug-related crimes in the region.

Despite bipartisan apprehensions concerning legality and potential violations of international laws, proposals to require presidential approval for further military actions have been stalled in the Republican-led Senate. Democrats continue to express concerns that these military strikes may exacerbate disorder and invite international condemnation.

The recent strike reflects the US government's escalated efforts in combating drug smuggling, indicating that military interventions against suspected drug running vessels in the Caribbean are likely to persist as part of a wider campaign against narcotics.
