Jakarta, Indonesia — Authorities in Indonesia have disclosed that a 17-year-old boy is the prime suspect in last week's mosque bombing incident at a high school in Jakarta, where he reportedly constructed several explosive devices within his home. The explosions led to injuries for 96 individuals, including the teenager, who is currently hospitalized following two surgical procedures.
Law enforcement officials describe the suspect as a socially isolated individual with a deep obsession for violent and extremist online materials. While his online interests lean towards global extremist figures, officials confirmed that there is no established connection to any terrorist organizations.
“This individual was driven to take such drastic measures,” stated Iman Imanuddin, the Director of General Criminal Investigation at Jakarta Police. “He felt isolated and lacked avenues to voice his grievances, whether to his family, community, or at educational institutions.”
Investigators revealed that the teenager crafted seven explosive devices using readily available materials such as 6-volt batteries, plastic jerry cans, remote controls, and sharp nails aimed at maximizing injury. Four of these bombs exploded, while the other three were neutralized by police.
Additionally, a toy submachine gun featuring inscriptions of white supremacist slogans and names of international extremists, including those connected to attacks in Canada and Italy, was recovered by the authorities. As Mayndra Eka Wardhana, spokesperson for the elite counterterrorism unit noted, “These names and symbols are linked to violent figures and ideologies that seem to have influenced the suspect's actions, yet there are no ties to any terrorist groups.”
Given Indonesia’s stringent anti-terrorism legislation, the teenager may be charged under serious assault rather than terrorism laws, which could lead to a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
Reports indicate that over half of the injured students suffered hearing loss, with four instances of sudden deafness. Eleven students remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition due to burns.
This event has stirred apprehensions about the dangers of online radicalization among youth and the availability of guides for constructing homemade explosives.
