Canadians are rethinking their travel choices, significantly moving away from the United States as a favored destination for 2026. Insights from a recent travel survey indicate that almost two-thirds of those planning trips next year are eyeing locations beyond the U.S.
Conducted in November 2025, the survey examined responses from over 1,000 Canadian adults, showing that 62 percent are less inclined to visit the U.S. compared to the previous year. A significant number are instead opting for destinations perceived as safer, more reliable, and providing better value.
Traveling domestically remains a top choice, with more than a third of participants planning trips within Canada. Europe comes next in popularity, followed by Mexico and Asia, revealing a rising interest in long-distance travel and diverse cultural experiences. Only a small percentage of Canadians anticipate traveling to the U.S. in 2026.
Age demographics influence travel preferences significantly. Older Canadians express more reservations about U.S. visits, while younger individuals show some willingness, albeit with caution. Main factors for avoiding U.S. travel include political tensions, delays at the borders, safety issues, and unfavorable exchange rates.
Booking trends highlight this shift; Canadian leisure travel to the U.S. has seen a drastic decline in 2025, whereas bookings to Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and Asia are either steady or climbing. Industry analysts suggest that this represents a significant change in consumer sentiment rather than a decline in overall travel enthusiasm.
As Canadians continue to seek meaningful, cost-effective travel experiences, the global tourism landscape for 2026 is clearly changing, with the U.S. no longer holding the central position.
