A major rescue operation ensued when the ferry Queen Jenuvia 2 ran aground off South Korea’s southeastern coast on Wednesday. The vessel was carrying 267 occupants, including crew, and became stranded near the uninhabited island of Jogdo, while en route from the resort island of Jeju to the port city of Mokpo.
Fortunately, all 267 passengers and crew members were successfully rescued, with no fatalities reported. However, 27 individuals suffered minor injuries, primarily bruises and scrapes, according to the South Korean coast guard. Authorities have managed to bring the 26,000-ton ferry to a nearby port, where investigations are currently in progress.
Following the incident, the coast guard took action by arresting key crew members, as investigators probe whether the ferry’s captain or navigating officer displayed negligence leading to the grounding. A comprehensive investigation is underway to unveil the cause, aiming to avert future occurrences.
Eyewitness accounts reveal the chaos aboard the ferry during the grounding. Passengers shared their experiences on social media, detailing a loud bang as the ferry hit rocks. One passenger recounted, “There was a loud bang, and the ship tilted. We were instructed to don life jackets and remained on the top deck.” Diving instructor Kim Namhyun from Jeju Island expressed, “I thought I might die. Remembering the Sewol ferry disaster, I prioritized staying calm and adhering to safety measures.”
This grounding incident took place near the location of the infamous 2014 Sewol ferry disaster, where over 300 individuals, mainly schoolchildren, tragically lost their lives. This incident remains a poignant reminder in South Korea, prompting enhanced safety protocols for ferry operations.
The situation surrounding Queen Jenuvia 2 underscores ongoing safety challenges within South Korea’s coastal regions. The coast guard and relevant authorities are determined to conduct a detailed examination focused on both mechanical and human errors, including navigation practices, crew training, and the vessel’s equipment, to secure passenger safety in future ferry operations.
Ferry travel constitutes a crucial link between South Korea’s islands and the mainland, pushing officials to reinforce safety guidelines. Despite the successful rescue of all individuals onboard the Queen Jenuvia 2, the incident highlights the inherent risks posed by maritime navigation along rocky coastlines.
