Leh (Ladakh), November 17, 2025 — An early morning quake shook the residents of Leh on Sunday, as a mild earthquake registering 3.7 on the Richter scale struck the Union Territory of Ladakh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed this seismic occurrence, noting that the tremor was recorded at 03:15 am IST with a shallow depth of 10 km, making it perceptible across surrounding areas.
The official NCS report indicated that the epicenter was pinpointed at latitude 36.64°N and longitude 75.29°E, which is consistent with the tectonically active Himalayan zone. The agency posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“EQ of M: 3.7, On: 17/11/2025 03:15:33 IST… Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”
Although the tremor was categorized as mild, numerous residents experienced light shaking, particularly those in taller buildings. The quake occurred during the night, which added to the unexpectedness and brief concern among the populace. Local authorities later confirmed that there were no injuries, damage, or disruptions to essential infrastructure.
Given its location in the Himalayan seismic belt, Ladakh frequently faces low to moderate intensity quakes due to the tectonic pressures between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Experts indicate that shallower earthquakes, even those of moderate magnitude, can be notably felt as they occur near the surface.
While the magnitude was not significant, it underscores the ongoing seismic risks in the area. This year alone, Ladakh has experienced several minor quakes, triggering discussions about disaster readiness, structural integrity, and public awareness, especially during the winter months when conditions can hinder emergency responses.
Both the NCS and local government are closely observing the situation for any aftershocks. Residents have been encouraged to stay vigilant but not to panic, as minor tremors are typical for the region. Safety guidelines regarding what to do during and after an earthquake are anticipated to be released soon.
As tectonic shifts continue in the Himalayan region, experts stress the need for updated building regulations, emergency training, and heightened community awareness. Even minor seismic events highlight potential gaps in disaster preparedness and the significance of being ready.
For the moment, life in Leh continues as usual, with Sunday’s tremor serving as a gentle reminder of the town's location within one of the most active seismic regions globally.
