Early Friday morning, a powerful earthquake rattled Bangladesh, creating panic and resulting in injuries and fatalities throughout various areas. The seismic event, which registered a magnitude of 5.5, occurred at 10:38 am close to Narsingdi, approximately 33 km from the capital city, Dhaka.
The abrupt tremor instilled fear among many, particularly since it struck during the weekend when people were at home. In several Dhaka neighborhoods, frightened individuals hastily exited buildings, with some seen comforting each other amid the chaos.
Official reports indicate that at least nine lives were lost and that more than 300 individuals sustained injuries due to the quake, with some victims hospitalized in Dhaka for serious conditions.
A total of 14 buildings were reported damaged in various districts. Debris from an eight-storey structure in Dhaka collapsed onto a major roadway, injuring nearby pedestrians.
Additionally, a fire erupted at a power plant in the aftermath, but emergency services promptly contained it.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of turmoil. One individual described seeing debris fall on shoppers, while another reported a young child fatally injured from crashing rubble.
The interim leader of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, expressed deep condolences for the casualties and injuries. He confirmed that government entities were instructed to evaluate damages and provide immediate assistance.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the tremors persisted for roughly 26 seconds, granting individuals time to evacuate buildings as they swayed.
Yunus, who took leadership following last year’s widespread protests, reassured the public that all necessary steps are being taken. The nation anticipates elections in February 2026.
The earthquake's impact was also noted in the Indian city of Kolkata, over 325 km from the epicenter. Residents fled their homes, although significant damage was not reported in India.
Authorities continue assessing the full extent of the devastation in Bangladesh, as emergency teams remain deployed in the affected locales.
