In a significant development, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy convened the third iteration of the Water and Energy Majlis, themed “From National Readiness to Smart Resilience.” This pivotal gathering occurred as part of the Abu Dhabi Water & Power Week, strategically aligned for late 2026.
A notable moment during the event was the announcement of the Abu Dhabi Water and Energy Resilience Framework. This framework was explored in an esteemed session featuring Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak and Dr Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, moderated by Dr Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Department of Energy.
The comprehensive framework is anchored on three core elements: infrastructure; human capital and governance; and technology and innovation. It encompasses 15 strategic initiatives designed to bolster the resilience, reliability, and efficiency of the UAE’s water and energy infrastructures. Key focal points include supply security, emergency preparedness, resource diversification, and integrated management systems.
This Majlis is part of the campaign “Our Foundation is Strong,” launched in 2026 by the department. It gathered ministers and senior officials from over 30 nations alongside experts from public and private water and energy sectors.
Key discussions revolved around enhancing regional collaboration, improving emergency response frameworks, and leveraging digital advancements and AI for crisis management. Participants sought collaborative strategies to develop a unified regional framework to bolster resilience in water and energy sectors.
In his address, Dr Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan emphasized the necessity for stronger collaboration among national and regional entities, advocating for an integrated regulatory system to secure resources and enhance service reliability.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment underscored the country’s holistic approach toward water, energy, and food security, advancing towards its net-zero target for 2050 through sustainable practices including climate-smart agriculture, efficient desalination, and circular economy initiatives.
The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 aims to refine demand management and increase sustainable water production while promoting global partnerships through initiatives like the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.
World Meteorological Organization President Dr Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous highlighted the crucial role of precise weather monitoring and early warning systems in safeguarding water and energy systems, boasting the UAE's advanced meteorological network, AI-driven forecasting, cloud seeding technologies, and regional data-sharing agreements.
The Majlis wrapped up with emphatic calls for strengthened partnerships, standardized regulatory frameworks, and the establishment of specialized task forces focused on crisis management and ensuring enduring water and energy security for the region.
