Controversial DRS Error Gives Alex Carey Lifeline in Ashes Test

Post by : Meena Hassan

During the first day of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval, a significant DRS controversy emerged as technology failed, allowing Australia’s Alex Carey to evade a critical caught-behind appeal.

Carey, who was on 72 runs, edged a delivery from England bowler Josh Tongue that was expected to be caught by Jamie Smith. The on-field umpire dismissed the appeal, and the decision stood even after the use of the Decision Review System (DRS).

The Snicko technology, designed to detect faint edges, registered a sound but incorrectly aligned with the ball’s trajectory, allowing Carey to proceed with his innings. He ultimately scored 106 runs before his dismissal later that day.

Todd Greenberg, CEO of Cricket Australia, labeled the occurrence as “unacceptable,” highlighting failures in both umpiring and technology. He stated that the governing body is pursuing an explanation from the tech provider to prevent recurrence of such issues.

The company responsible for Snicko acknowledged the mistake, revealing that a wrong microphone was used in audio processing, leading to the error. Additionally, England lost a review during this incident, though the officials upheld the original call.

Earlier, Australia amassed 371 runs after opting to bat first. They now lead the Ashes series 2-0 following their victories in Perth and Brisbane.
