Afghanistan Earthquake Kills Over 800 And Leaves Thousands Injured

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

One of Afghanistan’s most tragic earthquakes has caused terrible destruction, killing more than 800 people and leaving at least 2,800 others injured. The earthquake struck around midnight, catching many people while they were asleep in their homes. Families were left shocked and broken as entire villages collapsed in seconds.

Details Of The Earthquake

According to officials, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6 and struck at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers (about 6 miles). The shaking was strong enough to bring down mudbrick houses and damage entire communities. Because it happened during the night, many people could not escape in time, which increased the number of deaths.

Provinces Most Affected

The worst-hit areas were the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar. Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that 610 people died in Kunar alone, while 12 were killed in Nangarhar. Other surrounding villages and towns also reported severe damage. The disaster left behind scenes of destruction where houses, schools, and small shops once stood.

Villages Completely Destroyed

Authorities reported that three villages in Kunar were completely destroyed. Homes made of mudbrick could not withstand the force of the earthquake. These houses are common in Afghanistan, especially in rural areas, but they are very weak during natural disasters. As walls collapsed, families were trapped inside, leading to many casualties.

Injured People Need Urgent Help

More than 2,800 people were injured, many with broken bones, head wounds, and internal injuries. Hospitals in the nearby provinces were quickly filled with patients. However, many health centers do not have enough medicine, equipment, or staff to handle such a large number of victims. Doctors have appealed for international assistance.

Health Ministry Appeals For Aid

Sharafat Zaman, the spokesperson for the Afghan health ministry in Kabul, said the country urgently needs international aid. He explained that thousands of families lost their homes and are now left without food, shelter, or medical care. “We need help because many people lost their lives and their houses,” he said.

Difficult Terrain Slows Rescue

Rescue efforts have been made very difficult because the earthquake struck in mountainous areas near the border with Pakistan. These areas are hard to reach, especially since many roads are narrow and unsafe. Heavy rain and bad weather have made conditions even worse. Some areas are cut off from mobile networks, which slows down communication with rescue teams.

Survivors Struggle In The Cold

Families who survived are now facing another challenge. With their homes destroyed, many are forced to sleep outside in the cold and rain. They have no blankets, no proper food, and no protection from the weather. Children and elderly people are especially at risk of falling sick. The government and aid groups are trying to provide tents and temporary shelters.

International Community Urged To Act

The Afghan authorities have appealed to international organizations, neighboring countries, and humanitarian groups for immediate help. Afghanistan already faces many difficulties due to poverty, past conflicts, and lack of resources. This earthquake has added another layer of suffering. Without quick support, the death toll could rise even higher.

Comparing With Past Disasters

Afghanistan has a long history of natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, and droughts. However, this is one of the worst earthquakes in recent years. The last major earthquake that caused similar destruction was in 2023, which also killed hundreds. Experts say the country’s fragile infrastructure and remote geography make it especially vulnerable.

The Struggle Of Rescuers

Rescue teams, made up of local villagers, Afghan emergency units, and some volunteers, are digging through the rubble with bare hands and simple tools. In many places, bulldozers and heavy machinery are not available. Families are helping to search for relatives, sometimes finding bodies buried under collapsed houses. The emotional pain of these discoveries is overwhelming.

Hope Of Finding Survivors

Even though it has been difficult, rescuers are still hopeful of finding survivors trapped under debris. Past experiences show that people can sometimes survive for several days if they are protected under certain structures. This hope keeps the rescue teams working around the clock despite exhaustion.

The Impact On Daily Life

In addition to the loss of lives, the earthquake has damaged farms, shops, and small businesses. This will have a long-term effect on people’s livelihoods. Many families who lived modestly before are now left with nothing. Children’s education is also disrupted as schools in some areas were destroyed or badly damaged.

Global Reactions To The Disaster

Several international organizations have expressed sympathy and concern. Humanitarian agencies are preparing to send aid, but access to remote Afghan provinces remains a major challenge. Neighboring countries may also play an important role in delivering medical supplies and rescue equipment.

The Pain Of Families

For families who lost loved ones, the grief is unimaginable. Parents are mourning their children, and children are crying for their parents. Entire families have been wiped out in some villages. The earthquake not only destroyed houses but also tore apart family bonds.

Long-Term Challenges

Even after the immediate rescue operations end, Afghanistan will face long-term challenges in rebuilding the destroyed villages. Rebuilding homes, schools, and hospitals will require resources that the country does not have on its own. Experts believe that strong international cooperation is the only way forward.

The Spirit Of Unity

Despite the tragedy, the earthquake has also shown the spirit of unity among Afghans. Neighbors are helping each other, sharing food, and providing comfort to those who have lost everything. This spirit of solidarity may help them endure this difficult time until larger aid arrives.

Remembering The Victims

As Afghanistan mourns the loss of more than 800 lives, prayers and memorials are being held across the country. Religious leaders have called on the people to stay strong and to support each other in this time of great suffering.

The deadly earthquake in Afghanistan has left a deep scar on the nation. With over 800 people killed, thousands injured, and entire villages destroyed, the need for international assistance is urgent. Afghanistan’s health ministry, local rescuers, and families are doing their best, but without global help, the suffering will only continue.
