Air India has confirmed its intention to reinstate flights to China from New Delhi in February 2026, marking a significant revival after nearly six years of suspension. Additionally, the airline intends to launch a new Mumbai–Shanghai route next year, contingent on securing the necessary regulatory approvals.
This move aligns with a broader relaxation of aviation restrictions between India and China, as noted by the recent announcement from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport regarding the resumption of flights. Air India characterized this step as a reflection of enhanced diplomatic relations and increased trade collaboration between the two nations.
“The re-establishment of Air India’s services to Shanghai comes after recent India-China diplomatic efforts that have rekindled the air routes initially halted in early 2020,” the airline stated.
This decision follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to China, his first in seven years, for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). During the visit, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping affirmed that both countries are development allies and discussed ways to strengthen their trade relations amidst global tariff challenges.
The revival of direct flights is anticipated to enhance business, tourism, and cultural exchanges between these two significant Asian countries, contributing positively to bilateral trade that has struggled in recent times. Travel industry experts indicate that renewed air connectivity will serve as a vital driver for Indian firms seeking prospects in China and vice versa.
The proposed resumption is part of a comprehensive strategy to expand Air India’s international operations. Officials have noted that adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency will be prioritized as flights resume.
Industry analysts view this development as an encouraging sign for regional diplomacy, emphasizing the commitment of India and China to move past previous tensions and concentrate on mutual economic and developmental objectives.
As commercial and diplomatic relations revitalize, travelers can look forward to better travel options between India and China by early 2026, marking a pivotal chapter in the civil aviation history of both nations.
