Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, has sharply condemned UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood for what he describes as “ethnic stereotyping.” His criticism follows Mahmood's remarks in the House of Commons, where she referenced around 700 Albanian families in taxpayer-funded accommodations, asserting their presence as a part of her government's proposed changes to the UK’s asylum framework.
During her address, Mahmood expressed that the asylum system was “out of control and unfair,” and outlined reforms that would transform refugee status to temporary, prolong the period for permanent residency from five years to two decades, and enable deportation of families without the right to remain. She also suggested new legal pathways to the UK and an annual cap on asylum seekers, asserting that unsuccessful claimants must be sent back, irrespective of their nationality.
In response, Rama took to social media, deeming Mahmood’s comments a “statistical drop in the ocean of post-Brexit Britain’s challenges,” and admonished that targeting Albanian families is perilous demagoguery. He pointed out that Albanians contribute positively to the UK economy, with a low percentage accessing UK benefits compared to other communities.
Rama emphasized the successful collaboration between the UK and Albania on illegal migration, referencing their returns agreement from 2022, which has led to over 13,000 deportations from the UK back to Albania. He criticized Mahmood for jeopardizing this alliance and perpetuating a populist narrative detrimental to Albanians.
This is not the first time Rama has disputed the portrayal of Albanian nationals, having previously clashed with British politicians over similar issues. Earlier this year, he rejected hosting UK “return hubs” for failed asylum seekers and accused prominent figures like Nigel Farage of disseminating misleading statistics that stigmatize Albanians.
Rama asserted that UK policies should not be influenced by ethnic stereotypes, maintaining that “this is the very least humanity expects from Great Britain.”
This exchange emerges amidst ongoing discussions in the UK about asylum reforms, reflecting persisting tensions in the UK-Albania relationship concerning migration and diplomatic affairs.
