UCP Staff Attends Online Meeting of Alberta Separatist Group: NDP Claims Data Breach

UCP Staff Attends Online Meeting of Alberta Separatist Group: NDP Claims Data Breach

Post by : Shweta

Political tensions in Alberta escalated this week as the Alberta NDP accused staff from the United Conservative Party (UCP) caucus of participating in an online meeting organized by a separatist group, which allegedly handled sensitive voter data. This incident revolves around the Centurion Project, a pro-Independence group now under scrutiny for allegedly publishing a database of private voter information.

The NDP claims that video evidence and screenshots from an April meeting indicate UCP staff’s involvement as separatist group members discussed voter data and political strategies. Opposition members allege that sensitive information involving millions of Alberta voters was either showcased or referenced during these discussions. The party is demanding an explanation from the government regarding the involvement of caucus staff with a group under investigation by Elections Alberta and the RCMP.

The UCP has acknowledged that caucus staff were present during the online session but denies any misconduct. According to caucus representatives, such political staff frequently attend public meetings on significant provincial matters. They also stated that participants claimed the voter information was legally obtained and asserted that no UCP staff members had downloaded or shared the database.

The Centurion Project has emerged as a notable entity in Alberta’s separatist discussions. It reportedly launched an online platform containing a searchable database with names, addresses, and other personal details of about three million Alberta voters. Elections Alberta subsequently secured a court order to remove the website upon determining the group lacked authorization to collect or distribute this data.

Reportedly, the leaked data included information on politicians, judges, journalists, and regular citizens. Privacy experts have raised alarms, claiming this breach could lead to identity theft, harassment, and significant security risks. The RCMP and Elections Alberta are now probing into how this data was acquired and whether any legal infringements occurred during its sharing.

The Alberta NDP has criticized Premier Danielle Smith’s administration for not adequately distancing itself from separatist entities. Opposition members contend that any engagement between government-affiliated staff and groups managing private voter information poses substantial ethical and democratic dilemmas. They further interrogated whether authorities were promptly alerted post-meeting.

Over the past year, Alberta's separatist movement has gained prominence, with groups advocating for a provincial referendum on independence from Canada. Organizers claim to have gathered hundreds of thousands of support signatures. However, Indigenous leaders and constitutional experts have voiced strong opposition, arguing that such separation attempts violate treaty obligations and Canadian law.

Political analysts suggest that this controversy may intensify scrutiny on the UCP government ahead of upcoming legislative discussions on Alberta's sovereignty and referendum implications. Public concern around privacy and the management of sensitive voter data is escalating, while authorities have yet to disclose whether criminal charges or further legal actions will be pursued as investigations by the RCMP and Elections Alberta continue.
