Alyssa Healy, the 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Australia, has made the decision to retire from international cricket. She confirmed that the upcoming matches against India will mark her final appearance for the national team. Following Meg Lanning’s retirement in late 2023, Healy stepped into the captaincy, concluding a stellar career highlighted by multiple World Cup victories and extraordinary personal records.
Healy played an essential role in the Australian women's cricket team, contributing to two One-Day International (ODI) World Cup championships and six T20 World Cup triumphs. In an emotional statement released on Tuesday, Healy mentioned that although her passion for representing Australia remains, she feels she has lost the competitive spirit that once drove her, leading her to decide that now is the right time to retire.
In reflecting on her experiences, Healy shared how much she will miss the friendships forged with her teammates, the thrill of celebrating team victories, and the honor of opening the batting for her nation.
Since making her debut in 2010, Healy has totaled 3,563 runs in ODIs, including seven centuries, along with accumulating 3,054 runs in T20 internationals with a solitary century. Behind the stumps, her impressive record includes 275 dismissals, establishing her as one of the premier wicketkeepers in the sport.
Cricket Australia’s Chief Executive commended Healy as one of the sport's all-time greats, recognizing her significant contributions both on and off the field during her remarkable 15-year journey. Healy has built a legacy that stands alone, separate from her famous cricketing family, including her uncle, Ian Healy, a former iconic Australian wicketkeeper, and her husband, Mitchell Starc, a leading fast bowler.
Having already stepped away from T20 internationals, Healy will conclude her international career with a series of three ODIs and one Test match against India scheduled for February and March. Despite witnessing the rise of women’s cricket throughout her career and her exceptional reliability—missing only two matches since her debut in 2011—this final Test will be only the 11th she has competed in as part of the longer format.
Alyssa Healy’s retirement signifies the end of a remarkable chapter in Australian cricket, leaving behind a legacy characterized by talent, leadership, and commitment to the game.
