Anne Hathaway Shines as a Pop Sensation in Mother Mary

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway assumes a captivating role as a renowned pop star in the highly anticipated film Mother Mary. This cinematic piece delves into the complex and heartfelt dynamics between two former friends.

In the film, Hathaway portrays “Mother Mary,” a once-famous pop figure who faces challenges ahead of a crucial comeback concert following an enigmatic incident. In her quest for guidance, she journeys to England to meet fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel. Their reunion at Anselm’s tranquil countryside studio rekindles memories from a decade past.

This reconnection stirs lingering feelings of anger and sorrow, while simultaneously highlighting the profound relationship they once shared.

Hathaway disclosed her rigorous preparation for the role, which included daily dance practice for up to eight hours over several months. She also dedicated an entire year to refining her singing abilities for the film. The actress drew upon the artistry of global icon Beyoncé, fully immersing herself in the character.

“I wasn’t just aiming for adequacy; I aimed to excel,” Hathaway remarked at the London premiere. She expressed her empathy towards her character’s challenges surrounding fame and self-identity.

Mother Mary is the brainchild of writer-director David Lowery and produced by A24, featuring original tracks by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. Hathaway showcases her vocal talent with seven selections on the soundtrack, titled Mother Mary: Greatest Hits.

Lauded by director David Lowery for her unwavering dedication, Hathaway ensured the music resonated with genuine emotional intensity.

Cinemas across the United States and the United Kingdom will premiere Mother Mary on Friday.
