The League of Arab States and the General Women's Union (GWU) organized the first meeting of the executive committee of the Arab Observatory for Women’s Economic Development. National representatives from various Arab countries attended this significant session to prepare for the observatory’s pilot phase before its official launch.
The meeting focused on enhancing regional efforts to support and empower women economically, creating a collaborative platform for exchanging ideas and developing strategies that benefit women across the Arab world.
Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, GWU Secretary-General and Chair of the Steering Committee of the Arab Observatory for Women’s Economic Development at the League of Arab States, welcomed all participants. She conveyed greetings from H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the “Mother of the Nation,” who is Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation.
Al Suwaidi highlighted the important role of national focal points in implementing the observatory’s programs and boosting women’s economic participation in the region. She noted that the observatory represents constructive Arab cooperation and reflects the UAE’s ongoing commitment to regional initiatives that empower women.
The meeting allowed participants to share feedback, coordinate activities, and establish mechanisms to ensure the observatory operates effectively. These discussions aimed to maximize the observatory’s potential and prepare it for successful official operations.
The observatory is expected to become a central hub for collecting data, sharing best practices, and developing programs that encourage women’s active involvement in various sectors, including entrepreneurship, employment, and leadership. By doing so, Arab countries hope to provide women with opportunities to strengthen their skills and contribute meaningfully to economic development.
The UAE’s vision for regional collaboration in women’s empowerment was a key topic. The observatory will serve as a reference point for tracking progress and supporting member states in implementing effective policies that improve women’s economic roles.
Officials emphasized that the observatory would enhance understanding of challenges and opportunities for women across different countries. It will help governments, institutions, and organizations create policies that promote equality, close gaps, and foster a more inclusive economic environment.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintain strong cooperation and ensure the Arab Observatory for Women’s Economic Development becomes a practical and influential platform for regional efforts to empower women economically.
