Charges Against Indian-American Scholar Ashley Tellis Denied

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Ashley J. Tellis, a 64-year-old Indian-American scholar and former senior advisor in the US government, has refuted allegations claiming he retained classified documents and engaged with Chinese officials. Arrested on Saturday, Tellis holds pivotal roles from the George W. Bush administration and now faces potential imprisonment of up to a decade.

Tellis’ defense attorneys, Deborah Curtis and John Nassikas, stated they would contest the allegations robustly, mentioning that any implications of him acting as a representative for a foreign adversary are incorrect. “Ashley J. Tellis is a highly respected scholar and senior policy advisor,” they asserted.

The criminal affidavit, which came to light on Tuesday, indicated that Tellis accessed the State Department late on September 25, appearing to print documents linked to US Air Force methods. Furthermore, it suggested that he had multiple meetings with Chinese officials at a restaurant in Fairfax, Virginia, where he purportedly delivered a manila envelope.

The federal charges emphasis improper management of classified materials, rather than the meetings themselves. An FBI agent verified that a search of Tellis' residence revealed over 1,000 pages of confidential or top-secret documents.

Having a distinguished career in international affairs, Tellis served as a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a prestigious think tank in Washington, which has since placed him on administrative leave after the arrest.

A naturalized American citizen originating from India, Tellis played a crucial role in negotiating the Bush administration’s civil nuclear cooperation agreement with India, a landmark achievement fortifying relations between the world’s two largest democracies.

More recently, he has been vocal in Washington regarding various policy issues tied to India, including its position on Ukraine, arguing that New Delhi’s priorities do not consistently align with US interests.

This case has garnered substantial attention, given Tellis’ prominence within the realm of international policy and his influence in shaping US-India relations over the years. As the legal process unfolds, his defense team is determined to refute all allegations and restore his reputation regarding the mishandling of classified information.
