Asia-Pacific Aviation Sector to Demand 19,560 New Aircraft by 2045

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The aviation sector in the Asia-Pacific region is gearing up for substantial expansion, with Airbus estimating a necessity for 19,560 new aircraft over the next 20 years. This demand encompasses both narrow-body and wide-body planes, representing 46% of the total global demand for 42,520 new aircraft, emphasizing the region's pivotal role in aviation's future.

Leading Growth: India and China
Airbus Asia-Pacific President Anand Stanley noted that passenger traffic in the area is projected to increase by 4.4% annually, surpassing the global increase of 3.6%. Stanley stated, “With a growing number of travelers each year, this region is entering a thrilling growth period,” mentioning that India and China are crucial to this trend.

India, one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, is seeing airlines expand their fleets with significant aircraft orders. Airbus foresees a need for 3,500 wide-body and 16,100 single-aisle aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region over the next 20 years, which corresponds to 43% and 47% of global demand, respectively.

Infrastructure Developments Bolstering Aviation Needs
India's aviation infrastructure is witnessing notable enhancements. On October 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a ₹19,650 crore initiative aiming to become India's first fully digital airport. Featuring online baggage drop, digital immigration, pre-booked parking, and an automated people mover system, NMIA will function as Mumbai’s second international gateway, alleviating congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Spanning 1,160 hectares, the airport is designed to accommodate 90 million travelers annually once fully operational. Its connectivity to expressways, metro systems, suburban rail, and water transport is poised to elevate passenger convenience.

Similarly, Noida International Airport at Jewar has completed an essential calibration flight, indicating readiness for commercial services. Strategically positioned by the Yamuna Expressway and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the airport aims to serve the Delhi-NCR region and nearby cities such as Agra, Meerut, Mathura, and Aligarh, enhancing accessibility across the region.

Airlines Prepare for New Flight Routes
As new infrastructure comes online, airlines are adjusting their operations accordingly. IndiGo has announced plans to launch services from Navi Mumbai Airport on December 25, initially connecting ten domestic destinations including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Lucknow, with plans for further expansion.

Akasa Air will also begin operations from Navi Mumbai on December 25, starting with routes between Delhi and Navi Mumbai, followed by flights to Kochi, Goa, and Ahmedabad. The airline intends to scale up to 300 domestic and 50 international departures each week, showcasing its confidence in India's growing aviation landscape.

Growing Demand and Future Landscape
With the combination of escalating passenger traffic, the expansion of low-cost carriers, and improved airport infrastructure, the Asia-Pacific region is on the verge of a critical phase in aviation. Especially, India and China are poised to be key players in global aircraft demand, positioning the region as a focal point for manufacturers, airlines, and investors worldwide.

Airbus's forecasts underscore the substantial growth potential, presenting opportunities for airlines, airport operators, and related industries as they prepare to meet the soaring demand in the skies in the coming years.
