Australia and Indonesia are on the verge of finalizing a key defence agreement in January, signifying a major enhancement in their enduring security relationship. This announcement coincides with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's initial state visit to Australia, during which both leaders emphasized the agreement as a pivotal moment for their bilateral ties.
Endorsed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Prabowo, the pact ensures both nations will engage in frequent discussions at both leadership and ministerial levels regarding security issues. Additionally, it sets out a framework for advantageous defence interactions and a protocol for addressing potential security challenges together or separately.
“This agreement exemplifies our nations' consensus that the path to securing peace and stability is collaborative action,” Albanese stated, asserting that the treaty heralds a new chapter in Australia-Indonesia relations. Prabowo remarked, “Good neighbours support one another during challenging times,” highlighting the cultural and strategic importance of their partnership.
This new agreement builds upon earlier arrangements, such as the 2006 Lombok Treaty and the 2024 Defence Cooperation Agreement, further solidifying a resilient security bond that has developed since periods of tension between Indonesia and Australia over East Timor. While the specifics of the treaty are not public, officials confirmed it is inspired by the 1995 security deal made by then-Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating and Indonesian President Soeharto.
Shared apprehensions about China's increasing economic and military influence in both the South China Sea and the Pacific region highlight the strategic significance of this agreement. Both countries acknowledge that a security threat to one could directly affect the other, thereby underscoring the necessity for coordinated defence strategies.
The agreement is anticipated to bolster joint initiatives such as military collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strategic planning, ultimately enhancing stability within the Asia-Pacific region.
