80-year-old Australian Found Dead on Lizard Island After Cruise Excursion

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

An 80-year-old Australian woman has died on Lizard Island after being left behind by a cruise vessel during a shore excursion, authorities say. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Family members identified the passenger as Suzanne. She joined a guided walk to Cook’s Look, the island’s tallest point, on October 24 but was unable to keep up and stopped to rest while the group continued. Crew and passengers initiated a search when she was noticed missing; her body was located the following morning. Queensland Police described the death as “sudden and non-suspicious.”

The voyage was aboard the Coral Adventurer, part of a 60-day luxury itinerary around Australia, with fares reported at about AU$80,000 (US$50,000). Fellow travellers and crew expressed shock, calling the outcome avoidable.

Suzanne’s daughter, Katherine Rees, said the family is devastated and questioned the decision to leave the island while her mother remained unaccounted for. She described her mother as fit and active, adding that heat-related illness had left her feeling unwell and she was not escorted when sent ashore.

AMSA confirmed the Coral Adventurer’s crew will be interviewed when the ship docks in Darwin on November 2. Investigators are examining boarding records and whether established safety procedures during shore excursions were followed.

Officials and advocates say the case highlights gaps in passenger accountability and shore excursion management, prompting renewed calls for clearer protocols and tighter safety checks on cruises.

The death on Lizard Island has provoked national concern and serves as a reminder of the need for robust cruise safety and emergency preparedness measures.
