In response to the tragic incident at a Jewish gathering near Sydney’s Bondi Beach that resulted in 15 fatalities, Australia is launching its most extensive national gun buyback initiative to date. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that this effort aims to significantly decrease the number of firearms across the nation, thereby preventing future crises.
Labeling this a landmark reform since 1996, Albanese announced that the government will purchase surplus, newly prohibited, and illegal guns nationwide. The 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which remains the deadliest shooting in Australia’s history, fundamentally altered the country's firearms laws.
“Currently, there are more guns in Australia than after Port Arthur, which is not sustainable,” stated Albanese, referencing over four million registered firearms in the country. He highlighted the need for stringent regulations on gun ownership, asserting that civilians shouldn’t require multiple weapons.
The initiative will be administered by state and territory governments responsible for collecting firearms and providing compensation, while federal law enforcement will oversee the destruction of surrendered weapons. Officials anticipate that potentially hundreds of thousands of firearms will be taken off the streets through this program.
Australia boasts some of the strictest gun regulations worldwide and one of the lowest rates of gun-related homicides. Following the 1996 crisis, a buyback scheme successfully removed over 650,000 banned firearms, a measure often credited with decreasing gun violence.
The recent Bondi incident has prompted renewed national introspection. Authorities revealed that the attackers, a father and son duo, were influenced by extremist beliefs. One was killed at the scene, while the other faces charges of terrorism and murder.
Confronted with a rise in hate crimes, Albanese also introduced stricter hate speech laws, emphasizing that the violence was an affront not only to the Jewish community but to Australian values at large.
To honor the victims, Australia will hold a national day of reflection a week post-attack, urging citizens to light candles in remembrance. In Bondi Beach, swimmers and surfers have come together for emotional tributes, representing unity, resilience, and the refusal to allow hate to define the nation.
