In a controversial incident, over 150 Palestinian passengers, including families and a pregnant woman, were held by South African authorities on a charter plane for approximately 12 hours due to issues with their travel documents.
The group landed at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport on Thursday morning after a stop in Nairobi, Kenya. Authorities cited the absence of exit stamps from Israeli officials, lack of local addresses, and unspecified stay durations as reasons for denying them entry.
Pastor Nigel Branken, who had the opportunity to speak with the passengers while they were still on board, described the conditions as extremely troubling. He reported that the airplane cabin was intensely hot, creating a distressing environment for children who were crying and agitated. “It was unbearably hot. There were many children just sweating and crying,” he mentioned.
Ultimately, the passengers were allowed to disembark Thursday night after intervention from South Africa's Ministry of Home Affairs. The local NGO, Gift of the Givers, stepped in to provide shelter and assistance to the travelers. According to the Border Management Authority, 23 individuals have since departed to other countries, leaving around 130 Palestinians in South Africa for the time being.
Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of Gift of the Givers, noted that this was the second instance in recent weeks where planes carrying Palestinians arrived in South Africa. Many among the passengers are believed to be fleeing conflict in Gaza and were unaware of where they were ultimately headed. Some are now exploring avenues to seek asylum in South Africa, known for its historical support of the Palestinian cause.
This event has triggered significant backlash on social media and from various civil society organizations, prompting questions about why the travelers were not permitted entry to file for asylum, a right enshrined in South African law. Pastor Branken pointed out that the treatment of these individuals was not representative of the nation's commitment to human dignity.
Authorities have yet to disclose who arranged the charter flight, leaving many questions unanswered regarding the situation. This humanitarian issue highlights the obstacles faced by displaced individuals while emphasizing the critical role of NGOs in providing essential support during international travel emergencies.
