Initiative to Slash Bengaluru Traffic: 117km Business Corridor

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Bengaluru, known for its relentless traffic jams, is embarking on a significant shift with the introduction of the Bengaluru Business Corridor. This extensive 117-kilometre peripheral ring road project, approved by the Karnataka cabinet, aims to alleviate congestion and stimulate economic growth. With an estimated investment of around Rs 10,000 crore, the project, overseen by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), is projected to be completed in two years. By rerouting vehicles between highways and industrial areas, the corridor seeks to cut city traffic by 40%, marking a pivotal milestone in urban planning for Bengaluru.

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted the ambitious nature of the Bengaluru Business Corridor, aimed at alleviating traffic woes while ensuring just compensation for about 1,900 families affected by the project. “Bengaluru is experiencing severe traffic issues. We need to reduce it. Compensation will surpass expectations, and this corridor is among the most crucial initiatives by the Karnataka government,” Shivakumar stated. The government has committed to land acquisition without de-notifying properties, and in cases of resistance, compensation will be secured through court deposits, ensuring timely progress for the Bengaluru Business Corridor.

The project strikes a balance between urban expansion and the interests of landowners. To mitigate concerns regarding land acquisition, the government has devised a five-option compensation model for impacted farmers and landowners. These options include cash payouts up to three times the guidance value for rural properties, Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) at double the guidance value, additional Floor Area Ratio (FAR/FSI) for remaining land, provision of developed land for residential owners losing over half an acre, and offerings for commercial landowners adjacent to a 35-metre corridor. Such strategies are aimed at ensuring both the city and affected stakeholders benefit from the corridor's development.

In addition to easing traffic issues, the Bengaluru Business Corridor is set to drive industrial and commercial growth along its path. By unlocking substantial land for investment, the corridor aims to reinforce Bengaluru’s status as a key economic center, drawing in businesses while enhancing mobility. Urban planners foresee that this project will not only alleviate current road congestion but also encourage planned urban proliferation, confirming the Bengaluru Business Corridor as a significant development in the city’s journey.

Projected to become an essential infrastructural framework, the Bengaluru Business Corridor will intertwine traffic management with economic prosperity. As its completion nears, residents and businesses in Bengaluru can anticipate a transformative phase of urban mobility and economic potential, characterized by smoother journeys, shorter travel times, and strategic growth along the corridor's 117-kilometre stretch. By harmonizing transportation strategy with economic vision, the Bengaluru Business Corridor embodies a progressive solution to the city’s traffic challenges and future prospects.
