Bengaluru Physician Arrested for Allegedly Using Anaesthetic to Kill His Wife

A disturbing incident has surfaced in Bengaluru, where a doctor has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife, who was also in the medical field, by administering an overdose of a potent anaesthetic. The event occurred on April 21 at the residence of the couple situated in East Bengaluru's Munnekollal locality. Dr. Mahendra Reddy, a general surgeon affiliated with Victoria Hospital, is accused of injecting his wife, Dr. Kruthika Reddy, with Propofol. Shortly after the drug was administered, Dr. Kruthika fell seriously ill, leading her husband to rush her to a nearby private hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The couple had been married for under a year, having exchanged vows on May 26, 2024, both being reputed professionals at Victoria Hospital.

The police initially categorized the incident as an unnatural death at the Marathahalli Police Station. Investigators began routine investigations, gathering evidence from their home. However, the findings at the location raised alarms among the officers. A Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) retrieved crucial medical items like a cannula set, syringes, and an injection tube, all of which were secured and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis. Additionally, viscera samples from the victim were taken to establish the cause of death.

Weeks later, the FSL results provided a pivotal clue, confirming the presence of Propofol, a widely used anaesthetic designed to induce unconsciousness during surgical procedures. The report indicated that the dosage detected in Dr. Kruthika's body was far too high to be accidental, suggesting an intentional overdose. This pivotal finding changed the investigation's trajectory from a natural death to a suspected homicide carried out with medical precision.

In response to the FSL's findings, the victim’s father formally accused his son-in-law of murdering his daughter on October 13. The Marathahalli Police acted swiftly and apprehended Dr. Mahendra Reddy in Manipal, a renowned academic town in coastal Karnataka, on October 14. He has since been returned to Bengaluru for further questioning and is now in police custody.

During a press conference, Bengaluru's Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh remarked that the evidence pointed strongly to the husband's role in the crime. He stated, “The data we’ve gathered indicates the husband’s involvement. He was the one to take her to the hospital, stating she was unwell, yet evidence suggests she was sedated. This implies a malicious intent, prompting further investigation.” Authorities suspect the accused may have utilized his medical expertise to portray the death as natural to evade suspicion, and they are exploring whether the act was premeditated or if existing disputes influenced it.
