The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised for a substantial victory in the Bihar state elections, with initial vote counts indicating strong support, as per reports released on Friday. This anticipated win marks a crucial rebound for Modi after his national party struggled in the last elections, where they lost influence in Parliament.
Bihar, with its population of nearly 130 million, stands as a vital political arena. The state contributes the fifth-largest number of representatives to Parliament, thus holding significance in the broader dynamics of national politics and the Hindi heartland narrative.
According to data from the Election Commission of India, the NDA is leading in more than 170 constituencies, surpassing the assembly majority threshold of 122. Reports hint that the alliance could reach up to 191 seats, marking an impressive gain of 69 seats compared to the previous elections.
“The mandate from Bihar is unmistakably clear!” tweeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “The electorate indicates their preference; development must be the identity. Good governance, not anarchy, is what's needed!”
Political analysts have pointed to Modi’s initiative in September, which directed 75 billion rupees ($853 million) towards support for women under an employment scheme, as a pivotal factor. This effort seems to have invigorated female voters, who are increasingly shaping electoral decisions in India.
Amitabh Tiwari, a political analyst conducting surveys across Bihar, emphasized that women played a crucial role in the NDA’s anticipated success. According to Tiwari’s VoteVibe survey, the coalition managed to capture 48.5% of the female vote, leading the main opposition by over 10 percentage points.
This victory in Bihar represents a significant resurgence for Modi, who is gaining back influence through state-level elections after a national setback. It also positions the NDA favorably ahead of elections scheduled next year in Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, where BJP holds governance only in Assam at this time.
The Bihar election outcome underscores the success of policies centered on development and targeted engagement with voters, reinforcing Modi’s approach of intertwining welfare efforts with a message of effective governance. Experts suggest this result could influence the national political scene, potentially bolstering the NDA's strength as they prepare for future parliamentary challenges.
