In a sorrowful conclusion to a month-long search operation, authorities in Nepal have located the remains of two Indian tourists who vanished in the snowy Manang district. They have been identified as 52-year-old Jignesh Kumar Lallubhai Patel and his 17-year-old daughter Priyansa Kumari Patel, missing since October 20 during their trek in the Himalayas.
The Armed Police Force (APF) reported that a specialized mountain rescue unit, under the direction of Deputy Superintendent Hira Bahadur GC, discovered the bodies buried under thick snow, roughly 100 meters above the Maleripa Monastery located in Ngisyang Rural Municipality.
“The rescue team worked tirelessly in challenging weather conditions for weeks,” APF DSP Shailendra Thapa stated. “The bodies were found on November 9, and the recovery process should conclude today.”
The father and daughter duo had set off from Gyalzen Hotel in Ngisyang on October 20, notifying staff of their intention to trek towards the Maleripa Monastery in Ward No. 5. After they lost all communication, hotel personnel alerted the APF’s Mountain Rescue Training Center in Manang, launching an extensive search in the snow-bound landscape.
October saw one of the harshest snowstorms in recent years in Nepal, spurred by successive weather systems. Although Cyclone Montha affected later in the month, another weather front had already brought significant snowfall, disrupting many trekking paths and stranding hundreds of tourists.
Reports indicate that over 1,500 tourists were saved from Manang after the storm hit. However, the Patels went missing prior to the cyclone's impact, likely affected by sudden temperature drops and perilous snow conditions.
Officials pointed out that all trekking routes in the Himalayan region were temporarily closed for over a week due to hazardous conditions and obstructed mountain trails.
The tragic discovery of the Patels’ bodies has provided closure to a distressing situation that has concerned local authorities and the Indian embassy in Nepal. Efforts are now underway to ensure the safe retrieval and repatriation of the bodies to India following all necessary formalities.
This tragedy highlights the unpredictable risks associated with high-altitude trekking in Nepal, particularly as winter approaches and snowstorms can arise suddenly.
