A Boeing 747 cargo plane on a flight from Dubai to Hong Kong tragically crashed into the sea early Monday morning, killing two individuals, as confirmed by officials. The aircraft, operated by Turkish carrier ACT Airlines and temporarily leased by Emirates, was attempting to land at Hong Kong International Airport around 4 a.m. when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that the plane collided with a security vehicle outside the runway perimeter before plunging into the water. Thankfully, there was no cargo aboard, and the crew has been reported safe.
The incident at Hong Kong International Airport, noted as the world’s busiest cargo hub, has sent tremors through the aviation sector. Footage from the scene revealed the Boeing 747’s fuselage partially submerged and cracked, with its tail section severely damaged and emergency slides deployed. Rescue teams retrieved two casualties from the submerged security vehicle: a 30-year-old man who died immediately and a 41-year-old man who succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Authorities clarified that the patrol car was outside the designated area and should not have accessed the runway.
In the wake of the crash, the north runway, completed last year as part of an $18 billion expansion, has been temporarily closed, although the other two runways at the airport continue to operate. According to the Airport Authority of Hong Kong, the cargo plane unexpectedly veered left midway down the runway and neglected to respond to radio communications. A comprehensive investigation has been initiated to ascertain the causes of the incident, including the recovery of the aircraft’s black box.
This crash underlines the inherent dangers at high-traffic cargo airports. Hong Kong International Airport handled an impressive 4.9 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, positioning it as the world’s busiest cargo airport, as reported by Airports Council International. Experts assert that effective runway safety measures, monitoring systems, and coordination between airborne and ground vehicles are vital in avoiding such tragic occurrences.
The investigation will delve into the Boeing 747 cargo plane’s landing mechanics, mechanical state, and communication with the control tower. While Emirates Airlines has confirmed the crew's well-being, airport officials highlight the necessity of reviewing operations on the newly commissioned north runway. This incident represents one of the most severe accidents recorded at Hong Kong International Airport since its inception in 1998.
Ongoing rescue and recovery efforts aim to secure the wreckage of the Boeing 747 and gather evidence for the investigation. The global aviation community is attentively watching for updates on how this routine cargo flight from Dubai ended in a catastrophic runway incident at one of the busiest airports in the world.
