On Sunday, a violent confrontation unfolded between Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP) fighters in Dogon Chiku, near Lake Chad, claiming about 200 lives, according to local intelligence and militia reports. This intense clash exemplifies the persistent ideological and territorial disputes between the two jihadist factions in northeast Nigeria.
Witnesses and former combatants reported severe losses for both sides. Babakura Kola, an anti-jihadist militia member allied with the Nigerian military, stated, "Around 200 Boko Haram militants were killed in the skirmish." In contrast, a former Boko Haram combatant named Saddiku revealed that ISWAP also incurred similar losses, with several of their arms captured. Boko Haram's fatalities were notably lower, with only four fighters reported dead.
"This could be the most devastating encounter between these factions since their conflict began," Saddiku commented from Maiduguri, Borno's capital and the insurgency’s hub. A Nigerian intelligence officer corroborated the violence's scale, estimating at least 150 deaths and labeling the encounter a critical episode in the ongoing struggle.
Boko Haram and ISWAP have been engaged in a lethal rivalry since 2016, prompted by a schism stemming from ideological divergences. Most of their confrontations are centered in the strategically vital Lake Chad area, a nexus of jihadist activity and territorial disputes.
This recent altercation emphasizes the region's instability and the ongoing menace presented by both factions, even as Nigerian military operations and allied militias attempt to counteract. Analysts caution that such infighting undermines both groups yet poses increased risks to local civilians who endure displacement and violence due to these upheavals.
As security forces maintain vigilance over the situation, this deadly encounter between Boko Haram and ISWAP starkly illustrates the enduring instability and humanitarian issues affecting the Lake Chad basin.
