In a devastating incident at the Kalando cobalt mine in the Lualaba province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 32 wildcat miners perished when a makeshift bridge gave way on Saturday, as reported by local authorities. The collapse occurred as miners hurriedly crossed the bridge above a flooded trench, despite existing warnings and bans due to severe rainfall. Ongoing rescue efforts are aimed at locating additional victims who may be trapped under the wreckage.
Roy Kaumba Mayonde, the provincial interior minister, noted that the bridge's failure was linked to the chaotic rush of miners attempting to traverse it. “The bridge collapsed after wildcat miners disregarded a formal ban on access linked to heavy rainfall and potential landslides,” he explained. The situation was made worse by the presence of soldiers at the mine, as highlighted by the SAEMAPE government agency, responsible for overseeing mining cooperatives in the area.
The Kalando mine has been notorious for its disputes between wildcat miners, lawful operators, and the regulatory cooperatives. The DRC’s cobalt mining sector has long been marred by allegations of unsafe work environments, corruption, and child labor, affecting over 200,000 people involved in informal and illegal cobalt mining.
Scenes from the incident reveal miners working tirelessly to recover bodies, with at least 17 deceased already reported. Provincial authorities have suspended mining activities at Kalando to conduct safety assessments and probe the disaster.
Cobalt, an essential element found in electric vehicle batteries, laptops, and mobile phones, is sourced predominantly from the DRC, which supplies over 70% of the global demand. This heartbreaking event brings to light the hazards faced by those in the informal mining sector, where minimal safety protocols are in place and the pursuit of mineral wealth often leads to tragic outcomes.
Local officials have emphasized the dire necessity for enhanced regulations, improved safety measures, and better oversight in the mineral-rich regions of the DRC. The international community has consistently advocated for reform within the cobalt sector to safeguard workers and prevent exploitation; however, incidents like this tragically continue to occur.
