Air India Pilot Allegedly Under Alcohol Influence: Canada Responds

Air India Pilot Allegedly Under Alcohol Influence: Canada Responds

Post by : Meena Hassan

The Canadian aviation sector is facing serious concerns involving Air India as an allegation surfaces that a pilot may have been intoxicated shortly before duty at Vancouver International Airport.

This incident took place on December 23, 2025, affecting Air India Flight AI186, which was meant to travel from Vancouver to Delhi with a stop in Vienna. The flight experienced a last-minute delay when one crew member was withdrawn just before takeoff.

Air India confirmed that the decision to remove the pilot was made after inquiries regarding the pilot's ability to operate the plane by Canadian authorities. The crew member was later taken by local authorities for further questioning.

An alternate pilot was swiftly assigned to ensure the safety of the flight, following established protocols, which led to the delay. Air India expressed regret for the disruption to passengers and emphasized its cooperation with Canadian investigators.

A letter from Transport Canada dated December 24, 2025, addressed to senior officials at Air India, disclosed that two breathalyzer tests administered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed the pilot's intoxication, deeming him unfit for duty.

Transport Canada remarked that this incident breaches Canadian Aviation Regulations, specifically CARs 602.02 and 602.03, along with the stipulations of Air India's Foreign Air Operator Certificate.

Both the RCMP and Transport Canada Civil Aviation are likely to pursue enforcement actions.

Air India has stated that the pilot will remain off duty as the investigation proceeds. The airline reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on aviation safety breaches, noting that strict disciplinary measures will follow if the allegations are validated.

This incident has prompted increased scrutiny over pilot fitness evaluations and alcohol compliance protocols for international airlines operating within Canadian airspace.
