A group of Canadian legislators and civil society advocates was barred from entering the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Tuesday, igniting concerns about human rights and freedom of movement. Israeli authorities cited “public safety” as the rationale for their action, involving Jenny Kwan, an MP from Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP).
Kwan vehemently opposed the assertions from Israel, asking how humanitarian workers and elected officials could pose a security threat. “How can members of parliament be deemed a public safety issue? How is it that organizations dedicated to humanitarian actions are classified as security risks?” she remarked during a conversation.
The trip, put together by The Canadian-Muslim Vote, featured 30 Canadians who intended to gather information in the West Bank. They aimed to meet with Palestinian community members to gain insight into daily life under occupation and scheduled discussions with Jewish families affected by ongoing conflicts.
Following prolonged inspections at the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge—the only border crossing managed by Israel on the Palestinian side—the group was sent back to Jordan. Kwan noted that one female MP faced multiple instances of “manhandling” by Israeli border officials while observing another delegate being subjected to additional questioning.
Officials from Canada clarified that the delegation was not representing the government and was traveling independently. Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the incident with regret but indicated it could not intervene in Israel’s security and border protocols. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that the ministry expressed concerns over the treatment of its citizens while underlining the diplomatic limitations in such situations.
This denial of entry follows Canada’s recognition of an independent Palestinian state in September, which reportedly upset Israeli officials. Critics and members of the Canadian delegation suggested that the refusal was politically motivated to prevent foreign observers from assessing the realities on the ground. Fawad Kalsi, CEO of Penny Appeal Canada, queried, “What are they trying to conceal?”
Kwan reiterated these worries, pointing out that foreign medical personnel trying to deliver essential supplies to the West Bank were similarly blocked. She warned that such restrictions facilitate the spread of misinformation and urged for greater global scrutiny of Israel’s occupation practices.
This incident contributes to escalating calls for transparency and accountability in the region, as activists and humanitarian organizations continue to report a rise in violence against Palestinians. Observers argue that it is imperative for the international community to focus on both diplomatic and humanitarian aspects to address the persistent crisis adequately.
