2024 Baltimore Bridge Collapse Linked to Cargo Ship’s Faulty Wiring: NTSB

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Baltimore, Nov 19, 2025 — A malfunctioning wire on the Dali cargo ship is being blamed for the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in 2024, as revealed by U.S. investigators on Tuesday. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), this disaster, which resulted in the loss of six lives, was entirely preventable.

The Dali, a container ship, struck a bridge pillar on the evening of March 26, 2024, leading to the deaths of six construction workers and sending several vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River waters. The incident caused significant disruptions to traffic and shipping operations at the Port of Baltimore, affecting a major interstate and resulting in severe economic fallout.

During a recent hearing, NTSB officials disclosed that a defective electrical cable aboard the Dali caused a sudden blackout, likely leading the ship off its intended course. "This tragedy should have never occurred. Lives should never have been lost," stated NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, underscoring the preventability of the incident.

Officials at the bridge were informed that the ship was off course but failed to alert the construction team’s inspector. Investigators observed that had the workers received a proper warning, they could have potentially evacuated to safer areas of the bridge approximately one minute and 29 seconds prior to the impact. NTSB engineer Scott Parent noted this critical window might have saved lives.

The investigation detailed several contributing factors, including both the power failure due to the faulty wire and problems with the ship’s fuel pump, as well as the lack of protective measures for the bridge against such impacts. These findings reaffirmed an earlier preliminary report from 2024, which hinted at electrical failures as a probable cause behind the blackout experienced on the Dali.

The fallout from the bridge collapse has led to substantial economic ramifications. Initial repair estimates were around $1.9 billion, with expected completion by 2028. However, recently revised figures now suggest repair costs could reach $5 billion, with reconstruction efforts extending to 2030. Maryland Governor Wes Moore emphasized that rising national material costs have played a significant role in the increasing expenses. “Trade policies from Washington, D.C. have inflated prices across the board, including vital materials for our bridge's reconstruction. Yet, despite these economic challenges, we remain committed to our goals,” Moore expressed.

This incident ranks among the most devastating bridge collapses in U.S. history, underscoring critical flaws in infrastructure safety and emergency communication strategies. The NTSB’s post-investigation recommendations are anticipated to shape future safety regulations for both maritime operations and bridge engineering, intent on preventing future accidents.

The investigation highlights the crucial need for strict maintenance of electrical systems on cargo vessels, prompt emergency notifications, and improved safety measures on essential infrastructure. Families continue to grieve for the six workers lost, while Baltimore confronts the daunting task of rebuilding its key transportation artery.
