Carney and Trump to Discuss USMCA During FIFA World Cup Draw

Post by : Meena Hassan

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to engage in a brief meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday in Washington, following Trump's recent hint that the U.S. might withdraw from the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).

This conversation will take place during the FIFA World Cup draw at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Carney will also have a short interaction with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

With Canada, the U.S., and Mexico co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the draw is crucial for grouping the participating nations, and it is expected to span roughly two hours. However, Carney has tempered expectations, indicating that significant trade advancements are unlikely in the context of this public gathering.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have been paused since October 23, triggered by the U.S. response to an Ontario government advertisement criticizing protectionist tariffs. The last direct engagement between Carney and Trump happened over a dinner in South Korea prior to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which did not produce significant results.

Currently, a mandated assessment of the USMCA is in progress in all three nations. On Wednesday, Trump remarked that the U.S. might opt to let the agreement lapse or pursue a new arrangement. Brian Clow, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, expressed doubt about the review process, highlighting that the Trump administration seems inclined towards unilateral moves rather than fostering mutual gains, complicating negotiations for Canada and Mexico.
