Dublin, Ireland — Catherine Connolly has officially taken office as the 10th President of the Republic of Ireland, heralding a significant moment in the country's political and social landscape. During her ceremony at Dublin Castle, Connolly promised to “listen to and nurture all voices” as she assumes this esteemed position.
The 68-year-old leader takes over from Michael D. Higgins, whose 14 years as president concluded at midnight. Connolly achieved a decisive victory in late October against Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys, vowing to lead a presidency dedicated to inclusiveness, unity, and dialogue across the island.
During her inaugural speech, President Connolly acknowledged Ireland’s changing identity, noting the “seismic changes that have occurred since the Cold War.” She underscored her dedication to fostering understanding and dialogue, especially between communities across the border.
“I look forward to my first visit to Northern Ireland as President,” she stated. “Today’s actions will influence the world our grandchildren inherit.”
Connolly lauded the Good Friday Agreement as a pivotal example of peaceful conflict resolution that inspires democratic societies around the globe.
The inauguration, held at St Patrick’s Hall in Dublin Castle, was graced by former presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, along with former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and current Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
Connolly took her oath before Chief Justice Donal O'Donnell and received the Presidential Seal, formally beginning her duties as head of state. While largely ceremonial, the role of President carries substantial symbolic significance in unifying and representing the nation's moral compass.
In a lighter moment, Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald were present, but Connolly amusingly referred to O’Neill as “Michelle Smith” during her speech, bringing smiles throughout the hall.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly was unable to attend due to previous Remembrance Day commitments in Belfast and Windsor, but extended her best wishes to Connolly, expressing hope for a future meeting.
While several unionist representatives were unable to participate due to scheduling conflicts, Ulster Unionist Party MLA Steve Aiken attended, stating that the absence of others was “not a snub.”
“As a unionist, I’m here to show respect towards the President,” Aiken conveyed. “It's essential to recognize the importance of this moment for Ireland.”
Post-ceremony, Connolly and her husband Brian McEnery journeyed in a ceremonial motorcade to Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the president. Later that evening, she participated as the guest of honor at a state reception in Dublin Castle.
On Wednesday, the newly sworn President is set to visit a gaelscoil in Dublin, a family resource center in County Meath, and a nursing home in County Galway, early acts that signify her intention to remain connected with communities nationwide.
Having served as a TD since 2016, Connolly has a background as a barrister and psychologist. Her election to the presidency triggers a by-election in Galway West, the constituency she represented in the Dáil.
As Ireland steps into this new chapter under President Catherine Connolly, her message of compassion, inclusivity, and unity promises to characterize her presidency — aimed at bridging divides and ensuring that every voice on the island is acknowledged.
