In a significant development, the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been prolonged for an additional three weeks after discussions at the White House. This agreement was facilitated by US President Donald Trump, who expressed his intentions to pursue a sustainable peace deal for the region.
The ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah present a substantial challenge to achieving broader peace in a regional conflict that has persisted for over eight weeks. Additional pressing concerns center on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its influence over the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump noted that the United States is not rushing to conclude a peace arrangement, highlighting the importance of an “enduring” deal. He asserted that the US has a robust stance during the ongoing maritime tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in the Strait remain elevated, particularly after Iran recently commandeered two large cargo vessels, which has raised significant alarms regarding international shipping and oil supply chains. Consequently, oil prices have surged, with Brent crude and US crude witnessing an increase of over 1% in response to the situation.
Employing fast, agile boats, Iran has altered its military strategy to confront US naval forces, indicating its persistent capability to disrupt maritime operations despite US assertions of dominance.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has dismissed allegations pertaining to instability within the Iranian leadership as mere enemy propaganda, asserting that the nation remains united.
The ongoing conflict has also fueled friction between the US and its NATO allies, with the US reportedly dissatisfied over the lack of full military support from certain countries. There are indications that the US may contemplate actions against nations that have not facilitated military access or backing.
The ceasefire with Iran has been extended indefinitely by Trump to accommodate further peace negotiations, although a definitive meeting date has yet to be established. He has also eliminated the prospect of using nuclear weapons, emphasizing that conventional arms have already inflicted substantial damage on Iran.
Despite the ceasefire’s extension, violence persists in southern Lebanon, with Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah sites resulting in the deaths of three fighters. Hezbollah retaliated with rocket attacks and drone strikes targeting Israeli forces in northern Israel.
Among the casualties this week was Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, as reported by local sources.
Prior to the ceasefire extension, Israel cautioned that it stood ready to launch attacks on Iran upon receiving US authorization.
