Changi Airport Terminal 3 to Embrace Digital and Robotics Advancements

Post by : Shakul

Changi Airport is embarking on a significant transformation for its Terminal 3, aimed at integrating advanced digital technologies and robotics. This initiative is designed to streamline operations and adapt to future demands.

Jeffrey Siow announced that the modernization project will introduce various forms of automation across airport functions. A tender is anticipated to launch in the latter half of 2026, with construction commencing shortly thereafter.

New systems will include automated security checks, self-service check-in kiosks, and robotics for maintenance tasks, all geared towards minimizing wait times and enhancing the traveler experience.

Since its opening in 2008, Terminal 3 has catered to a high volume of travelers, particularly during busy travel seasons. The planned upgrades will expand its capacity to handle increased passenger traffic more effectively.

Changi Airport Group has indicated that other infrastructure developments are also underway, including a 65% expansion of early baggage storage designed for the increasing number of transfer guests.

Improvements to the Skytrain service are on the horizon, with an approximate 30% increase in the number of operational trains. Additional bus gates are being introduced for better connectivity, alongside a new baggage transfer system designed to facilitate movement between terminals.

This initiative is also a preparatory step for accommodating next-generation aircraft. To support larger models like the Boeing 777-9, various aircraft stands will undergo upgrades in the near future.

Furthermore, Singapore plans to enable off-airport check-in services, allowing passengers at select hotels to check in and drop off luggage conveniently within the city.

The upgrade represents a portion of a broader three billion Singapore dollar investment strategy aimed at enhancing all four terminals. Even amidst challenges such as rising fuel costs, the airport has continued to witness growth in passenger and cargo operations, reinforcing its status as a leading global aviation hub.
